I finally got an internship, after I told Bucknell that I would go anywhere they could find me a placement. I moved to Santa Fe for the summer and did a very rough internship at UNM-Hospital. It was a great learning experience for me, and I feel like I could do anything after that... but it was ROUGH.
My parents came down for Graduation, and put 1200 miles on their rental car as I made them go to Carlsbad Caverns, then they helped me move to Santa Fe for the summer. Lots of miles, but it was amazing to graduate and be done and to be able to see them in the place that had been my home for nearly 2 years.
Over the summer, I applied for a million jobs, and I interviewed with a bunch of different places (ok 3) and I had my pick of jobs as a contractor in Roswell (for lots of $$), an SLP in a school district in Utah (for not a lot of money), and a job in Ruidoso, NM for (for a just right amount of money). (Did you catch my Goldilocks reference there?)
After I thought about it a LOT, and stressed about it even more, I accepted the job in Ruidoso.
Ruidoso is a nice little mountain town in southern New Mexico. It wasn't Seattle like I wanted, but it was the right place for me. Dr. Swift was the one who encouraged me to apply. She told me that "it's just a year, and it's a year for you to learn to be a professional without being a daughter or a girlfriend or anything other than just you." I'm super glad I took her advice.
Quick highlights from the last year:
- I got my own place, and a cute little dog (Ruby) and I had great friends and good co-workers.
- I worked at Ruidoso Middle and High Schools, where I learned that Secondary schools are maybe not my cup of tea... but I learned a lot about things in the process.
- I was the only young single adult in the ward and I was a nursery leader, primary teacher (for the 4-8 year olds), scout committee leader and Primary Presidency 1st counselor. I also occasionally played the piano, lead the music, spoke in church and did whatever they asked me to do. I got very tired.
- I broke up with Justin in August, via text. (Which seems heartless, but he wouldn't call me, what was I supposed to do?) It was hard. But again, the right thing to do.
- I had a dragon lady Clinical Fellowship Mentor. She was super
old-schoolOnly her way would work, and was just a general pain in the behind. But she passed me! So as of Friday 5/22 I can send in my application for my CCC's!! I can be a real SLP! - Betsy died. It was a very sad. Sad, but I got a new car. She is pretty. and red, and starts EVERY TIME! I have no worries about not making it to my destination, because my new Hundai Elantra starts every time. (And has a 100,000 mile warranty).
- I decided to move home, being 1500 miles away is hard, and I'm done with it. So I applied for a bunch of jobs, got a couple of offers, and finally accepted one in Federal Way, WA. It's about 35 minutes from my parents down I-5, and I am really excited to be going home!
- Speaking of which... I'm leaving Ruidoso in 3 days (THREE!) The next week and a half of my life is as follows:
- Wednesday: Last day of work (hopefully get someone to take away my Betsy car (which will make me cry!)
- Thursday: Finish cleaning and pack up my new car. Prep for the baby shower I was supposed to host on Saturday but I'm bailing on to go be with family.
- Friday: French Toast with friends, then hit the road! Spend the night in Nephi, UT (12 hours of driving)
- Saturday: Breakfast with friend, morning with Nieces and Nephew, Spend the night in Idaho (6 hours of driving)
- Sunday: 9 hours of drive time to HOME!
- Monday-Friday: Relax, hang out with mom, get Ruby settled, pack for Alaska.
- Saturday: Fly to ALASKA for the summer!
I am blessed by my experiences, and doubly blessed by the people who have contributed much to the things I have learned this year. May the next be as blessed.
Now to blog more faithfully :)
