Today I went to church for the first time in Colorado. I haven't decided if I'm going to go to the single's ward for the 4 weeks I am here or not (I would like to have some social interaction with people my own age). But for today I decided to just go to the 9:00 family ward that was closer to our house (which, in case you didn't see my facebook status is great and I can see Super Target from the driveway!)
Colorado must be full of Mormons because there are 3 churches within 20 minutes of the house. The family ward was closest and at my favorite time (since lately I've been waking up at 6am... gross!) The single's ward meets at 11:00 and is 10 minutes rather than 7 minutes away. I saw the church building on the way home from the airport last night and figured it wouldn't be too hard to find again. Thanks to the church finder on mormon.org I left home about quarter 'till and made it in time to sit and be reverent/decompress for a few minutes.
*As a side note, the Cordera ward building has a ZimmTech thermostat cover in their gym. Gives me warm fuzzies*
The Cordera ward is probably just like 100 other wards. Lots of young families, a few grandparents, quite a few youth. Everyone smiley and happy and distributing cheerios in little plastic baggies down their rows. I said hello to the elders and went and sat near the back, not wanting to take anyone's seat. I wondered if anyone would talk to me but not really expecting it. (I love missionaries, but if I were the missionary, anyone coming into the church alone for the first time you should grill a little and make sure they are a member!)
After sitting for a few minutes, an older man came up to me (older like in his 60's maybe). He asked my name and if I was visiting. I told him that I was kind of visiting... I had just graduated from the Y, and was living in Colorado for about a month and I wasn't sure if I would be going to the single's ward or the family ward yet. He was so nice and friendly. He then asked the man sitting behind me where Sunday School met (I wasn't planning on staying as I am going to Kelly's basketball game in a few minutes). The man told him, and they gave me directions (ie: just walk around the building till you find a room full of adults). The first man told me to enjoy my visit and went to go be friendly elsewhere.
I turned to the second man and said "Wow, you'd think the bishop would know where the sunday school meets." and he said "that wasn't the bishop, that was the nursery leader."
It just reminds me that "God does notice us and he watches over us, but it is usually through another person that he meets our needs." [And that person isn't always the bishop, sometimes it's the nursery leader] ~Spencer W. Kimball
i'm glad people were nice to you. you have a pretty open personality too so i'm sure you'll make new friends in no time. why are you only there for a few weeks. say hi to Michael Scott for me while you're there!
ReplyDeletealso my sister used to live in Denver and i decided back in 2005 that i should one day live there. it's a pretty great state. PLUS they don't usually have uber hot summers which is nice. and they had thunder storms everyday i was there, it was incredible.
I feel so good about you attending at a building with the church approved sensor guard cover. It just says good things about the truths that are taught there! And yea! for people who reach out to visitors!
