old movies and the wonderful thing that is netflix

A year and a half ago I learned that my parents had signed up for netflix. They have a DVD delivered to their home one at a time, and the entire database of movies and TV shows for streaming is available at the click of a button (and some significant streaming time depending on your internet connection). As of late, I've taken a real liking to old movies. Made in the 50's they have all the charm of the era. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era, born in the mid to late 30's would have made me a teenager/young woman in the 50's and I think that would have been absolutely awesome.

Recently I've watched three charming movies, deeply cementing my desires to be born earlier in the last century.
The Girls of Pleasure Island: I know, the title sounds like it ought to be an... adult film... but I promise it's not! Made in 1953 it tells the story of a small island at the end of the second world war. An English father has raised his three girls on this secluded island in peace, until 1500 US Marines are stationed there after not having seen a woman in months. Like most movies of the time, you have to wait until the last seconds of the movie for the happy ending.

Then, there was "Three Guys Named Mike" (1951) a movie in which an airline hostess who is full of spunk, finds herself romantically involved with three different men, all named Mike. She has to decide between the Airline Pilot, the Science Professor and the successful business man. I honestly didn't expect her to choose the one she did-- at the very last moment.

Finally, this morning, I watched
Here Comes the Groom Poster.
Who doesn't love a Bing Crosby flick? Filmed in 1951, Pete Garvey (Bing) is a foreign war correspondent who decides to adopt two French orphans, but has to convince his former fiancée, Emmadel, to dump her current millionaire fiancée and marry him in 5 days or he loses the children. Complete with singing and dancing, it's a great one!

This week I was having a conversation with my boss about the 13th Article of Faith. I realized that in my life, I  ought to spend more time with those things that are virtuous, lovely, of good report and praise worthy, and to eliminate those things that are not.
